See if everyone is asleep

SHE is a young, stunningly beautiful woman who guards her honour and dignity. He is a young, good-looking man known for his strength and agility. Both of them live in a small town populated by only tens or hundreds of people.

He is in love with her and cannot stop thinking about her. So when he saw her walking alone one night, he followed her for a distance until he had her cornered. When he came near to her, he said, "Woman, I crave for you."

She knew she could not move quickly enough to escape him, so she said, "First go and see if all the people are asleep."

Very pleased at her response, he walked around the town and check every darkened door carefully in silence, straining his ears to catch the sound of sleeping people.

After a while, he returned to the girl, and whispered, "Everyone is asleep," and was just about to reach for her when she asked, "What about Allah Azza wa Jalla. Is He also sleeping at this hour?"

He stopped his movement abruptly, stared at the girl incredulously. "Woman, what are you saying?" he exclaimed. "Indeed, Allah does not sleep: neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him."

"Yes, the One Who has not slept and does not sleep sees us, even if the whole people of this town do not see us," she said. "Do you not have any fear of He Who neither sleeps nor is heedless of anything that happens?"

The young man stood still briefly, then turned away and left the girl alone with tears flowing from his eyes — having nothing in his mind now except the desire to repent to the One Who neither sleeps nor is heedless of anything that happens.
